How to Deploy a Windows Phone 7 Application Using Visual Studio

After saying ‘Hello World’ to the Windows Phone 7 Application development, the time is now to successfully deploy emulator or to the physical device. In this tutorial, we gonna reveal easy steps to deploy a Windows Phone 7 App using Visual Studio, however there are various other deployment application available on the web; using visual studio is among the most simplest one to go with.

You can use visual studio express edition to deploy the newly built WP7 application to either Windows phone Emulator or you can also directly port to the Windows Phone Device, whether it’s a Nokia Windows phone or a Windows 7 phone. For testing purpose you can create a debug build when you are developing the application on visual studio and then can release the build, which you can use for the testing purpose.

The reason why one should create debug build is that, it contains additional debug information which is quite helpful when you submit the application to the market place. In addition to this, you can also create a release build prior before using the tools such as windows phone performance analysis tool and Market place test kit.

As we are using Visual Studio 2010 express for the Development and Deployment of the Windows Phone, you may need to perform some additional steps to specify a debug build or release for your WP 7 Application.

  • To specify a release build or debug for WP 7 Apps:

  • Step1: In the Visual Studio, go to the Standard toolbar and click on the Solution Configurations and select the Release or Debug. Look at the following image to visualize the Solution Configuration List Box:

  • Step2: In case of Visual studio 2010 express for WP7 apps, the solution Config list box is not displayed and hence you need to click on the Tool Menu and then head on to the settings and then click Expert Settings.

  • Deployment of the WP7 App on the Windows Phone Emulator:

If you do not have the WP 7 phone with you, you can also try out the developed WP 7 app on the simulator environment. Visual Studio express edition facilitates you with the Windows Phone Emulator with which even without the WP7 phone you can still deploy and test your application. If you have chosen Windows Phone Emulator as the target device, then visual studio will automatically run the app on the Emulator. TO check whether you have Windows Phone Emulator as the target device, you need to follow the below instructions:

  1. In Visual Studio express edition, head on to the standard toolbar and select the Windows Phone Emulator as the default target device.

  1. On the debug menu, either press F5 or click on the Start Debugging, this will deploy your app on the Emulator and will launch the WP7 application on the Emulator.

  • Deploying to a physical WP 7:

Before you try deploying the app to the WP 7 device, do remember to register your device and to meet the mandatory requirement.

  1. Ensure that, the WP 7 device is properly connected to the PC; it is turned on and also in the unlocked mode.
  2. Now head on to the Visual Studio and go the standard toolbar and select the Windows Phone Device as the target device.
  3. Now in the Debug Menu look for the option of Start Debug or press F5 to deploy the App on the device and to trigger the execution of the application on the WP 7 device.

That’s it. You have now successfully deployed your first application on the Windows Phone 7. In case if you have any confusion in deploying the App to the emulator or to the device, do let us know your doubts. We would love to come up with the solution to your issues.
